5 Minute Makeup for busy mums

Posted 27 September 2018

Whenever I tell people I’m a makeup artist the first question I am usually asked is, “Do you do lessons?” I’m so surprised at the number of people who would class themselves as “clueless” when it comes to makeup and/or the application. Being a busy mom to 4 I often don’t spend a lot of time in the morning on my makeup routine but I have a few tips and tricks to help me look half human when I leave the house!

Skin
I always start with a Moisturiser. Hydrated skin looks better, it’s that simple. I tend to use one with an SPF for sun protection as this helps reduce the key signs of ageing. Tinted moisturisers and BB creams are great if you feel as though you want something with a bit of coverage but it can be difficult to find something in the right shade in the supermarket brands. Unless I’m doing a full face of makeup and using foundation I tend to only use a concealer where needed.

Concealer
I use a cream consistency concealer like the MAC studio finish concealer. I use a brush to blend in a V shape a small amount under my eyes and then on top of my eyelids. I find using a brush allows me to blend easily and build coverage gradually but you can easily use your fingers or sponge to do the same thing. Just don’t apply too much as the product will sit in any creases you may have. I find the cream consistency concealers blend smoothly and don’t accentuate the lines under my eyes when I'm not using any other products. Use a concealer with a peachy undertone to brighten darker circles.

Brows
This is my non-negotiable in the morning. If I do nothing else, I do my brows! There are so many options now. Pencils, pomades, powders you really need to find what suits you and what you find easy to use for your morning ritual. I use a powder a lot but I also like a good brow pencil. I’m currently loving the Hourglass Brow Arch pencil as it goes on smooth and builds slowly. Fill eyebrows following the natural structure of your brow where there are gaps and build from the bottom up if you need to add to them. If you go to a makeup counter or a Mecca they will colour match you if you are unsure what colour to use but a general rule of thumb is to match your eyebrow colour one shade darker than your natural hair colour. Of course it isn't often that our brows match our hair colour so it’s really up to you how dark or light you like them to be.

Cheeks
A small amount of colour on your cheeks can really lift your whole appearance. A blush or bronzer can give you a bit of definition and colour and make your skin glow. They come in powder and cream consistency but if you are just starting to experiment with these you will probably find a powder easier to use and more long wearing. In summer I also like to use a tint such as Benefits Benetint. I apply a small amount to the apples of my cheeks and smooth in a circular motion to give me a rosy flushed look.

Lips
I rarely apply colour day to day. I good slick of Paw Paw ointment makes my lips look full and healthy, protects them from the elements and moisturisers them so they are in great condition when I do want to wear colour.
